WOOD FINISH
This walnut oil is 100% high linoleic acid walnut oil developed for woodworkers who want a non-toxic alternative to petroleum based polymerizing oils. What makes the oil unique is its ability to dry. The oil is sourced from trees in Northern California which are naturally high in two key fatty acids that help the oil polymerize. This is absent in culinary walnut oils. The oil is also heat-treated to remove the proteins that may cause allergic reactions to those predisposed to them. This oil is recommended to be used for wooden articles that make contact with food (butcher blocks, salad bowls, kitchen utensils) but can also be a substitute for many wooden items (children’s toys, indoor counter tops and even hardwood floors).
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• Clean with hot water and a mild dish soap and cloth.
• Dry off thoroughly after rinsing. Use a towel to dry off any access water and not just set it out on a dish rack.
• Season regularly, especially if your board is getting frequent use. This will keep it from drying out, protect the wood from moisture that causes warping, and will keep it looking beautiful for years to come. Use walnut oil to protect your board.
• Use food-grade wax, like carnuba or beeswax, if you’re wanting a little extra protection in addition to oil. Wipe on with a soft cloth and buff off to a smooth finish. You may use kosher salt and halved lemons or vinegar and baking soda to keep it sanitized and smelling clean. Sand the butcher block cutting board with a fine grit sandpaper if your board is starting to feel a little rough. Follow with a good oiling to keep it smooth.
TO AVOID DAMAGE, DO NOT:
• Use the dishwasher. Heat and water warp the wood.
• Use abrasive scrubbers like steel wool as they ruin the beautiful finish. Instead, use plastic scrapers for stubborn bits of food.
• Soak your board in water. You may rinse and wash your board, but allowing it soak for a longer period of time will cause warping.
• Use olive or vegetable oils. These can go rancid over time and cause nasty odors.
• Store it in an enclosed space. Air flow helps the board stay dry so that it doesn’t build up unwanted moisture that can cause warping and breaking.
• Place hot dishes on wood that has been treated with wax. This will cause the finish to fog. Trivets and hot pads should be finishes in oil only.
